When considering my placement year, I was looking for a position where I could grow my interest in the financial markets, to develop skills that make a difference, and to get an insight into the myriad tasks and challenges within the financial industry. Wealth Management seemed the right route to further my interest in financial markets while providing real value to clients. After attending an inspiring lecture at Bournemouth university given by Shannon, one of FP Wealth Management’s current employees my interest in the company developed. I decided that FP Wealth Management was where I wanted to be due to the responsibility and tasks given and the opportunities to study towards professional qualifications during the year.
Only one month into my placement year at FP Wealth Management and already I’ve been exposed to so much of the work of a busy Wealth Management firm and seen the importance and impact the work we do has on the clients. The current situation with COVID-19 meant online training but the outgoing placement student Chelsea was extremely supportive and we both quickly adapted to online training in the week leading up to my start date. Since starting, I have been working closely with my colleagues and already have gained a detailed insight into the day to day activities of a Financial Advisor and a Paraplanner.
Although I have been given a great deal of support, I have also been given the chance to complete work independently which is then presented to a qualified member of staff. This has increased my confidence and I am able to learn whilst doing, which is very different from the academic approach at University. I enjoy the fact that the work that I have been doing is very varied. My present tasks include helping to create the valuations and reviews for the end of the second quarter, grouping detailed information about clients and creating their files, and undertaking research activities for new clients. Already I have attended an investment strategy committee meeting which massively broadened my understanding of the financial markets and how they are being affected by the current crisis.
I am lucky to have been offered my first-choice placement position and the opportunity to apply my academic interests and knowledge within a professional environment. Each day at FP Wealth Management I am increasing my understanding and awareness of the world of work, accelerating my maturity, self-awareness, and ability to articulate skills and achievements. I am working with a professional, knowledgeable, and friendly team who are extremely supportive and willing to help whenever I require it. I am confident I will progress over the year as an individual but also as a financial professional and I am excited to continue my interest in wealth management.
